You want to switch your electricity provider, but do not know how?
No problem, we show you how to switch in five short steps 🙂
1.
It is important to know what your annual consumption is. You can find this on your last electricity bill. Before you switch your electricity provider, read the fine print!
Often electricity providers lure you with two-year contracts, but after the first 12 months the costs are significantly higher. Therefore, choose your provider wisely.
2.
If you want to switch to renewable energy, you should go for recognized and audited tarifs with a label, such as the WE LOVE ENERGY label. This is important because the terms “renewable electricity” “renewable gas” are not protected. The renewable label ensures that your green energy is really renewable. With the WE LOVE ENERGY label you also get the chance to vote for and support sustainable projects.
3.
Have you done your homework? You can choose the electricity provider of your choice and fill out the contract.
For this you need:
- Â the name of your current supplier.
- Â the customer number of your current supplier (you will find it on your annual bill).
- Â the meter number and your last annual consumption (you will find this on a sticker on the electricity meter)
→ The meter reading itself will be taken on the day of the change. Your electricity provider will tell you when this is required.
4.
And cancel now? No, you don’t have to. Your new electricity provider will do it for you! By giving your new electricity provider a power of attorney, they will cancel the contract with your previous provider. You will then receive a confirmation of termination and a final invoice from your old supplier. As soon as the new supplier has confirmed your re-registration, you will receive a welcome letter in which they will inform you when they will start the new supply and from when you will have to pay your instalments.
5.
At the end of your old contract, your new supplier will contact you. They will ask you to provide them with the current meter reading. You can read the meter reading from the electricity meter. There you will find an indicator that rotates, above or below it is “kWh”, this is your meter reading. If you have overpaid your old supplier, you will get this money back with your final bill.
So, that was it. We hope you are now a little smarter than before and know exactly what to do when switching electricity providers.
